Yes, you can use a copied one. However, you need to have it approved at a police station by taking a copy and the original. This, because of your obviously unqualified teacher, is not possible. You should sue the bitch for losing your identity, without your birth certificate you cannot get your ID card, which means you are fucked for the rest of your life.

Dude, it isn't a case of "I don't want to", if you don't get your birth certificate you cannot get an ID when you turn 18, so you can't get a drivers license, you can't get into any goo university, you cannot get a high-end job, etc.

If you don't get a new birth certificate, your whole life will be ruined!

it depends on where he lives .. For me they didn't ask for birth certificate for driving license or voter id.. They did ask for it in school and high school.. After high school, their transfer certificate will get you into college and university.. But thats just for me.. :p

Send your teacher to jail. (Too harsh? Then just kill her...)

Lol, it's all your teacher's fault because of losing your identity, now we don't know you. (Who are you? XD)

I'll give some words of wisdom (a.k.a. advice) firstly you shouldn't really give your actual original birth certificate. Instead go to a printer and print out a copy of your birth certificate and give that to your Librarian I assume, or other person that specifically requested it to get what you want, I have no idea how the system works where you live. I've done this before though and I only had to write some personal credentials in order to get a library card. But as said, I don't know how it works in your country.

When since do libraries need birth certificates?

Not all people on here live in a country where they can get one easily.

How in the hell does a teacher lose it? and why would you even give it to her? I'd take my passport (or some other identification) if they wanted me to sign up for a library that badly.

Or you can go to a registry office and get another copy. I don't know how much this will cost in the OP's country though.

I'm sorry to tell you this, but you really need to return, because without your birth certificate, if you don't have an ID card yet, technically you don't exist in the society.

Lol, you can order a new one. You really don't know what you're talking about do you?

@OP, You can start your quest for a new original birth certificate at http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/w2w.htm

Pick your state and follow the directions. Have your mother help you with the process.

It only costs around 20 bucks.

Generally, school has to provide you with some kind of document that confirms that they had received documents from you (like birth certificate, natch), and this document serves as a proof of their culpability if something happens to your documents.

I suggest going to lawyer with this. You may have lost your certificate, but your mother has all the necessary identification - and she would have to be the one to interact with lawyer anyways.

___

Ostensibly, another certificate can be obtained via Fiji embassy, if they maintain one in USA. Ought to, I think. They won`t do it without a good cause to, but that`s what lawyer should handle.

___

No matter what do NOT let this kind of thing go. If you sign any kind of paper whatsoever that says "I`m OK with the fact they lost my certificate" or just wait too long, all the costs of regaining it will be yours.

You don't have to go back to your country, for sure not. I don't know much about this stuff but I'm pretty sure you don't have to go back just because your teacher lost your birth certificate, otherwise it will have consequences for your teacher aswell. Next time give him/ her a copy and follow the advices of some users here. Lol, try everything out first before you travel back.

Get a lawyer for 20 bucks? In the end you'll LOSE money taking the school to small claims court.

EDIT: Also, I see you're in NZ Sparty, I'll look up the process for your country.

EDIT: Okay, you'll need to go here, Sparty. http://www.dia.govt.nz/Services-Births-Deaths-and-Marriages-Forms-Fees-and-Information-Brochures

Go to Birth forms and download then print out the "Request for Birth Certificate or Printout BDM 93B (pdf 95kb)".

Follow directions > Get Birth Certificate > ??? > Profit.
