why is it that some vps's get 50fps and buffer > 15ms whereas others get 47-49 and buffer around 10ms?

from what i can tell, it is not because the cpu is too slow

Less other running processes? Higher RAM and additional 'intelligent RAM' (flexible RAM to take care of memory usage spikes)?

depends on hardware, software and everything. some black magic is probably involved as well.

better don't ask and don't care. it doesn't really matter.

actually it does matter if you play competitively..
and I think it's a contributor to torque's "bullet/packet loss" problem

@banaan: 90% sure memory's not the reason.

cs2d's dedicated server is really lightweight so I think it's some library that's messing it up..

maybe timer resolution? idk

edit: http://kerneltrap.org/node/5411
so maybe a new kernel will do it

Actually, I can tell from my own experience that simply restarting a CS2D dedi to flush the memory overhead or whatever it's called does a great job to reduce lags caused by the server itself. Servers that have been constantly up and running for weeks in a row have significantly lower performance.

not that problem though
restarts don't do anything to fps/buffer
