You said "programming languages ain't for games, generally." Programming languages usually aren't made SPECIFICALLY for games, but they are still suitable for use in games. I do not need to learn how to read, my English is superior to 90% of the people in this forum already. ( I would say this is because of the vast numbers of people who don't speak it as their first language. )
You can start easily. Make a log file which will record all the paths for sprites which are used in map. Then it will be much easier to pack them in the future. You could simply read paths from a log file.
